"What Is An Idol" Text

"You shall have no other gods before me." (Exodus 20:3) What is an idol? An idol is anything or anyone we put before God. Even good things can become idols if we put them before God. Nothing and no one should come before the God that gave us life. None of us are perfect. But is there anything or anyone we are constantly putting before God? Work? Family? Fun? Anything? We should be good to people. We should take our responsibilities seriously. There is nothing wrong with fun that does not violate the Commands of God. But are we putting any of this before God? Is any of it more important to us than God? All of us need to search ourselves to see if we are putting anything or anyone above God. Where does our money go? It is right to pay our bills and to get things we need. But how much do we spend on God things? Do we give our tithes or do we spend that money on other things? How much time do we think about God and His Word? Are our thoughts constantly about other things? How much time do we spend in the Bible? How much of what we watch or listen to honors God? How much dishonors Him? How much do we talk about God in a way that honors Him? Do we spend time in God things every day, once a week, or once in awhile? Let us search ourselves. If we find anything or anyone we are putting before God, let us ask His forgiveness. God has to be first.
