Sermonette:
"Do Not Follow After Foreign Gods"
We can search from Genesis to Revelation and see no command to celebrate christmas and new years.
We can find the birth of Jesus in Matthew and Luke.
It doesn't give a date.
It would not be in December.
Symbols associated with these holidays come from pagan holidays.
God specifically commands we are not to keep these festivals.
We are to keep God's Commanded Holy Days.
Deuteronomy 12:2-3, 30
Jeremiah 10:1-4
You may think it is an innocent time of year and doesn't it celebrate the Birth of Christ.
If you do not worship the way He says, it will lead you to worship idols.
We have a sanitized version of these today so we don't know what they meant.
You don't see how they utterly reject God.
They should ask if God changed His Mind.
God does not change.
Malachi 3:6
We are in this world but we are not part of this world.
We do not want to be pulled into the worship of false gods.
They pull us to the god of this world (Satan).
Look forward to the true beginning of the year.
Not January 1st.
Look forward to God's True Holy Days.
Sermon:
"What We Don't Know"
Sometimes what we don't know can be disastrous and fatal.
What is your attitude toward what you don't know?
What should the attitude of a disciple of Christ be toward what we don't know?
What do other people see in us that we don't see in ourselves?
What don't we know about God?
Exodus 6:7-
Exodus 7:4-5, 17
Exodus 8:20, 22
God was making a point.
He wanted them to know Who He was.
Exodus 10:1-
They reshaped Him to what they thought.
Exodus 32
Exodus 20:1-
Despite all that they didn't know God.
Numbers 13:26-
What they didn't know was God had a plan for that.
Joshua 10:12
The sun stood still and the moon stopped.
Exodus 23:27
God was revealing Himself to them.
They knowingly forgot and didn't want to listen.
1 Samuel 4
We see what they thought they knew about God again.
They thought they knew God but they didn't.
Jeremiah 7
God wanted them to know Him.
He made many efforts to reveal Himself.
Jeremiah 2
Jeremiah 9
Isaiah 1:10-
God said they missed the whole point.
That has been a thread of the Bible.
Titus
They professed to know God but their actions showed they didn't.
Throughout history people have thought they knew God.
Romans 1:18-
Mankind has reshaped God into his own image.
John 7:25-
Job 36:22-
What we know and understand about God is only a fraction.
We can't fathom a Being that has created all things.
Do we leave it as a casual that we know there is a God?
Do we feel we already know God?
Job 7:11-
Even a righteous man can have blind spots.
We can be out of focus.
Truly knowing God takes an attitude of humility.
Psalm 25
We don't know what God is doing in our lives each and every moment.
Job 38
Do we value it as important to continually learn about God?
We need to deepen our search.
We need to look to Him for guidance.
Our mind and attitude is intended by God to continue us to the end.
There are expressions of God all around us.
If we think we got it all figured out, we don't learn about God.
Jeremiah 9:13-14, 23
There is a constant tidal wave of knowledge flowing over us.
We lose the ability to know about God if it is crowded out by other stuff.
If we know God and know of His Loving Kindness when things are bad we know He is with us.
Do we know God well enough that we are confident that He is always with us?
He loves us.
He cares for us.
He wants to allow us to learn.
Genesis 3:5
Isaiah 14:12
Replacing God with our knowledge and opinion instead of being at one with God, we are on the wrong road.
Knowing each other is a process that never ends.
If you've given up where does that leave you?
If we don't care we can't know and we can't grow.
Ezekiel 20:33, 38, 42, 44
Like a loving father, God is willing to forgive if we turn to Him.
Hebrews 8:7-
2 Corinthians 13
We can take the same question of ourselves as we approach the Passover.
David, Peter, Moses, and Paul learned about themselves.
Psalm 51
Do we want to know what we don't know?
Are we determined to know about ourselves?
