Ty turns to face John James.

Gabriel turns to face them.

JOHN JAMES

You wanted to know about our lives before here.

TY

I didn’t want to know anything really. I was just thinking you never talked much about it.

JOHN JAMES

Most of my life before here was in the Monastery.

TY

Did your parents really die in an accident?

JOHN JAMES

Yes. No one tried to hurt them. They were driving home in a bad storm. They never made it home.

TY

Where were you?

JOHN JAMES

I was with a babysitter.

TY

You never blamed yourself did you?

JOHN JAMES

No.

TY

I wasn’t saying you should. I just.

JOHN JAMES

I know.

GABRIEL

Your birth father made you feel your mother’s death was your fault so you always jump to the conclusion that things are your fault.

Chris walks over.

CHRIS

Do not refer to that man as his father.

JOHN JAMES

He said birth father.

CHRIS

Any man can father a child. It takes more to actually be a father. That man is nothing.

Jye walks over.

JYE

All he ever did was hurt you. That’s not a real father.

CHRIS

He is not even a real man.

TY

I don’t understand that. If he isn’t a man, what is he?

JYE

My dad didn’t mean it literally.

Michael walks over.

MICHAEL

Chris, are you always going to live here?

CHRIS

As long as these children live here, I will live here.

JYE

We will live here.

CHRIS

You are one of the children I referred to.

TY

We’re 18.

JYE

He will always see us as kids.

CHRIS

Yes.

MICHAEL

At 18 you are legal but you are still teenagers.

CHRIS

You are children.
