Book Excerpt from "Beyond Family" (Paperback Version ISBN: 978-1-387-39380-0)

EXT. – OUTSIDE THE CALIFORNIA MIDDLE SCHOOL – 3 P.M.

Nick is standing by the stairs. He is holding a bag. Nick walks down the stairs. Ty walks out of the school then follows Nick as he walks.

Nick continues to walk without noticing Ty.

Kara watches Nick as he walks into the alley. Nick puts his bag by the wall. He sits facing Kara.

NICK

You are a good girl. I love you, Kara.

Kara puts her paw on Nick’s right shoulder.

NICK

You are the very best ever.

Kara puts her paw down. She licks Nick’s face then backs up slightly. Kara looks away from Nick. She watches as Ty walks over. Nick stands up. Ty walks

closer.

TY

Is this why you didn’t want me to walk you home?

NICK

I don’t want to end up in an orphanage. They would take Kara away from me.

Nick starts to cry.

NICK

She’s all I have.

Ty kneels facing Nick.

TY

Tell me what’s going on.

NICK

I have to stay with Kara.

TY

I promise I won’t let Kara be taken away from you.

TY

(beat)

Tell me what’s going on. Let’s start with where your parents really are.

NICK

They died two months ago.

TY

What happened?

NICK

They killed themselves after my brother Tyler died in a car accident.

TY

I am sorry to hear that.

Nick cries harder.

NICK

I wasn’t enough for them. They loved Tyler but not me.

TY

How did you end up here?

NICK

I can’t lose Kara.

TY

You won’t. I will not let anyone take her from you. I promise.

TY

(beat)

Is this where you sleep?

NICK

Yes.

TY

Not anymore. Come with me.

NICK

What about Kara?

TY

She is coming with us.

NICK

Where are we going?

TY

To my home.

Ty stands up.

TY

Follow me.
